Abstract

This lecture is about the globalization of Japanese animation as a cultural process and the significance of culture in the process. It criticizes the easy theoretical discourses including globalization, localization as resistance, hybridization, cultural supermarkets, and soft power, none of which takes the anthropological idea of culture seriously. In the second part of the lecture, the idea of historical events will be introduced and the audience will be convinced that such an idea is the best theoretical framework whereby the globalization of Japanese animation can be understood.
